The Laufmaschine (1817)

The story of the bicycle begins in 1817 with the invention of the “Laufmaschine” or “running machine” by German Baron Karl von Drais. This early precursor to the bicycle, also known as the “Draisine” or “hobby horse,” featured two in-line wheels and a frame but lacked pedals. Riders propelled themselves by pushing off the ground with their feet, making it more of a walking aid than a true bicycle.

 

The Velocipede (1860s)

The next significant development came in the 1860s with the creation of the velocipede, commonly referred to as the “boneshaker.” Invented by Frenchmen Pierre Michaux and Pierre Lallement, the velocipede featured pedals attached to the front wheel. While this innovation allowed for faster travel, the iron wheels and rigid frame made for a rough and uncomfortable ride on the cobblestone streets of the time.
